Istanbul Metro was opened on September 16, 2000. It has 2 lines, 30 stations and a total length of 36,1 Kms (M1 and M2 combined). Urban transport system in Istanbul is also complemented by a line of Premetro (Hafif Metro), a suburban train, a tram system, an urban network of buses and a funicular. Metro system has more than 50 million users per year
Line M1 (Aksaray-Havalimani). It is a light train. It has 18 stations and a total length of 19,6 kms. Average speed is 36,7Km/h. Trip time is 32 minutes. Frequency at rush hours is 5 minutes. M1 makes about 416 trips daily.
Most important M1 stations: Havalimani ( at Atatürk airport terminal), Zeytinburnu (connected with Tram T1 ) and Aksaray. Taksim station connects with tran through tunnel and underground. Yenikapi stations interconnects to light and suburban trains.
Line M2 (Taksim-4.Levent). It is 16,5 kms length and it has 12 stations. In the beginning it just covered from Taksin to 4.Levent. Now the line has grown and covers from Sishane to Haciosman. Trip time is 27 minutes and average speed is 36,7Km/h. Frequency at rush hours is 4 minutes.It makes 394 trips daily.
Stations: Hacıosman, Darüşşafaka, Atatürk Oto Sanayi, İTÜ - Ayazağa, Seyrantepe - Stadyum, Sanayi Mahallesi, 4. Levent, Levent, Gayrettepe, Şişli - Mecidiyeköy, Osmanbey,Taksim, Şişhane.
Golden Horn metro bridge, Unkapanı, Şehzadebaşı, Yenikapı
M4 (under construction. 19 stations are planned from Kadıköy to Kaynarca.
Stations: Kadıköy, İbrahimağa, Acıbadem, Ünalan, Göztepe, Yenisahra, Kozyatağı, Bostancı, Küçükyalı, Altayçeşme, Maltepe, Gülsuyu, Cevizli, Hastane, Soğanlık, Kartal, Yakacık, Pendik, Kaynarca.
Schedule and frequency
Istanbul metro schedule is from 6:00 to 24:00. Depending on what line and time of the day,frequency is 4-5 minutes at rush hours to 5-15 minutos at normal hours.
Fares and tickets
Price is 1 Jeton. 1 Jeton costs 1,75TL ( 0,70 euros ). Jeton is a plastic tab valid for a single ride.
Istanbulkart Card It costs 10TL ( about 5 euros) with no rides. As with Jeton, Istanbulkart card is valid for buses, metro, trams, ship and funicular. With this card, rides are a little bit cheaper but you have to pay for the card itself.
